Qualitative case study researchers are interested in intensive descriptions and analysis of a single unit of analysis. For her, qualitative case study is used to gain a thorough understanding of a situation and the meaning it has for those in that context. While Merriam (1998) acknowledged the use of case study in quantitative research, she focused on qualitative case study. The case study method in quantitative methodology is seen as exploratory, hypothesis generating, and an adjunct to experimental research (Shaughnessy & Zechmeister). While the definition and sources of data are similar to qualitative case study, the overall purposes privilege experimental research. They indicated that sources of data may include naturalistic observation, psychological tests, and archival records. In their discussion of quantitative research methods in psychology, Shaughnessy and Zechmeister (1994) defined case study as "intense description and analysis of a single individual" (p. To highlight unique elements of qualitative case study, it is useful to examine some different perspectives on it. How case study is treated is a function of the particular philosophical assumptions underlying the methodology. In order to provide a context for this, I first discuss issues of definition, assumptions, and research plans pertinent to qualitative case study.Ĭase study is an acknowledged research strategy in both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies. Exemplars will be used to illustrate how qualitative case study is used to glean insights about gifted students that could not be obtained in other ways. The purpose of this article is to discuss how qualitative case study has been used to enhance our understanding of gifted students. In qualitative case study, measures are taken to ensure that the findings and their discussion reflect, as much as possible, the voices of the participants. Data do not speak for themselves they speak through the researcher as an instrument of the research process. As with their quantitative counterparts, qualitative researchers using case study must consider issues of validity and reliability, although these are reconceptualized to reflect assumptions underlying qualitative methodology. Unlike quantitative research designs that are selected and rigidly implemented, qualitative research plans are created by researchers to meet the purposes of their inquiries and are adapted, as required, during the research process. Generally, it is characterized by its emergent, flexible research plans whose components are in dynamic interaction. By enabling us to understand gifted persons' experiences, qualitative case study research serves to deepen our understanding of giftedness.ĭesigning qualitative case study research poses unique challenges to researchers. Through careful interpretation of information gathered by such methods as interviewing and participant observation, qualitative case study researchers can approximate the perspectives of gifted persons in various contexts. ![]() Use of qualitative case study enables researchers to let others hear their participants' voices. While quantitative research makes its own contributions to our understanding of gifted students and their education, it cannot access the lived experience of being gifted. Qualitative case study research benefits the field of gifted education by generating findings unavailable through other research methodologies. The works of Coleman (2001) and Hebert and Beardsley (2001) are used to illustrate how researchers can plan qualitative case studies such that the perspectives of gifted students are included in the discourse in gifted education. From a selection of case study articles drawn from 4 journals in gifted education, 2 are identified as exemplars of qualitative case study research in gifted education. ![]() In this article, issues relating to research plans in qualitative case study are discussed. Case study as a form of qualitative research activity is a vehicle by which researchers enable our hearing of the voices of gifted persons.
